INDIANAPOLIS -- The U.S. Geologic Survey reported that an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.4 has struck the Midwest.

The USGS Web site said the quake was centered near West Salem, Ill., or about 40 miles north of Evansville, Ind.

Indiana State Police spokesman Sgt. Todd Ringle said there are no immediate reports of damage.
